collection agenyt owns a debt

a collection agency has summoned me to go to court how can i find out if they bought my acoount from the orgianl crediter or if they are getting a % of what they collect ? Is it true that if they do not own the acoount they can not take me to court only the origaianl creditier can ? thanks

They can take you to court if the debt was officially assigned to them by the creditor (meaning they have an agreement with the original creditor.) In this case, they would be acting as agents of the creditor. How can you find out? I would go to the court date and make them prove it.
