Several months ago, I posted an article about a consumer's ability to prevent creditors from viewing his/her report under a new California law. Here is a link to the text of the statute. You will need to scroll down to section 1785.11.2:

Is this only for california residents or can anyone freeze their report?

The law only pertains to Californians. However, they have the procedures in place to comply. I wonder if they would honor such a request from a resident of another state. Couldn't be much of a burden.

I have some information here on this one I will try & dig up.
From what I remember it does come at quite a cost to freeze the file and it only lasts a year at a time, unless you specifically call in claiming id theft.
Think at this point it is still just California - but I can check on this also.
