I'm sure the answer is simple, but...
change in living situation--no longer at apartment where utilities are needed. Progress Energy has a final bill for me for $400. They were in my bk--discharge is almost here. My question--as this is a service that I will probably need in the future--given that there are only 2 utility companies in Central Florida--should I make arrangements to pay this balance off? Or let it be discharged?

Let it discharge.

Either way pay or not, the next time you need service they will require a 2 months deposit.

They will also likely expect you to pay the amount that was discharged. While it is illegal for them to force you to pay on a discharged debt, when it comes to services like utilities, they CAN refuse you service for an unpaid bill - even if it WAS discharged in bankruptcy. It's completely voluntary for you to pay - you either volunteer to pay or you don't get electric service - the game is fixed in their favor.

Let it discharge, then make arrangments to pay it afterwards.

Most utility companies are Bk suave, and would not violate the injunction by trying to collect a discharged debt.

I included mine and the utility company sent a nice letter with a new account asking for a deposit. My attorney told me I couldn’t include my current service, but in the end they slipped in with other canceled service. Saved me $500.

I know this is a little late but I just went though this with 2 utilities they never turned off my power or gas, discharged my balances up to my filing date, then asked for a deposit which they will hold on to for a year. one of the companies let me make a payment plan for my deposit. One deposit was $360 but I would rather pay that then the $1800 I owed them. I would just call them if I were you and ask them what will be required of you. I am sure BK are common for them and they will tell you their polices and procedures for them.
