Okay, I'm not an expert, but, thanks to a very good wino friend in Ohio, I do enjoy wine. He tends to prefer California wine (rather than that "frenchy stuff") and every time we get together I try to find something he enjoys.
For "drinking" wine...stuff to have with dinner, there's a brand he calls "Two Buck Chuck". Charles Shaw, I think. Red, Nice, Pleasant, not much of an aftertaste.
Last time we went back, I took him some of the local Iowa (Iowa?) wines. We were pleasantly surprised. There's a "Behind the Shed, Red" from Jasper Winery www.jasperwinery.com (http://www.jasperwinery.com) . They also do a nice white "Back Porch".
www.redtruckwine.com (http://www.redtruckwine.com) in California has "Red Truck", "White Truck", and "Pink Truck". All very drinkable.
I think the best I ever found though was an Austrailian Shiraz from Yellow Tale. The two bottles I bought in Ohio were absolutely delightful. However, when we got home and a bought some locally, it tasted more like paint remover.
Which, I guess, illustrates the major problem with buying wine that has to travel to get to you...you never know how it was treated in transit.
