Of course, I'm such a rabid fan I might be alone in this thread for a week at least...

Let's just say I've been up over 24 hours because I couldn't put it down.

I can say, I cried, I laughed, I cursed the very name of Jo Rowling and almost flung the book across the room twice. I was amazed at some of the plot turns. Very good read.

Now, I think I have to start from book one and read the series from start to finish....

PS - it was a great way to take away my nervousness having applied this weekend for my mortgage!

I bought the book for my daughter as soon as the store opened on Saturday AM. I read the Epilogue on the way home. I think she left the door open a bit for the next generation of Potter fans.

SHAME SHAME SHAME!!! :ah:ah:ah:

My mother started reading the epilogue, then got wide eyed and said "OMG - no way!" and laughed as I snatched the book away from her and told her she cannot have it back until I'm done reading it! :complainer:

I bought it Saturday evening and finished it late Sunday nite. A great book and a great end to series. I think it was the best book since the first two. I hope they spare no exspense when it comes time to make the movie and they make it long enough to capture the whole story.
I expected some of the things, but I was surprised by a lot.
Like any great series, I loved the book. I was saddened when I finished it, like saying goodbye to an old friend.

Not Alone!!!!

I got my book around 2:00 pm on Saturday and had it finished by 10:30 that night.

Agreed about the plot turns, and the crying, etc. I also agree with Nascar that she left the door open.

I was also sad to finish. But since I devoured it on the first go around, I'm sure I'll read it again soon.

Ahh, I got it at midnight on Friday and read all day Saturday.

Snape is my favorite character, so needless to say I loved the chapter "A Princes Tale" but was totally in shambles while reading.

Also - Dobby!

I'm so sad it's over!

You know, I thought we had a spoiler tag....

Snape...:D
I for years always said he was good and would die for Harry in the end to prove it, but lately I got cold feet and convinced myself he was evil - but that Dumbledore knew it and was playing him...shoulda stuck with my first instinct on that one. ;)

HOWEVER, I never believed those rumors about him loving Lily Potter! That did throw me! He called her Mudblood once!

Ron...
Leaving was terrible. I felt so bad for Hermione! And the big coward should have kissed her ages ago! Good lord...sometimes you wondered how he got into Gryffindor. lol I did feel bad for him when he was taunted by the locket horocrux, showing all his insecurities.

Hermione...
Didn't you just absolutely cringe when she was being tortured? By the best torturer save Voldemort??? She was infuriating when she didn't believe about the hallows, though. It's a world of MAGIC, Hermione - so it's not just fairy tale when magic happens. :p

Deaths...
Of course I was upset when we lost Moody...Hedwig...and Dobby was a tear-jerker for sure...but I really lost it when Fred, Tonks, and Lupin died. My heart broke in two! Oddly enough, I didn't shed a tear when Crabb bit it. 8-) AND I CURSED THE VERY NAME OF JK ROWLING when I thought she was killing Harry. I cried, I pounded my fists. I tried to close the book and stop reading. I was ready to book my flight to Scotland to give her a piece of my mind...

Voldemort...
I really thought he was quite the idiot this time around. However, I suppose desperation and fear make anyone not think clearly. He truly didn't have a clue about stuff that is so obvious and normal to people who have loving connections to others.

Dursleys...
When Dudley said "I don't think you are a waste of space, Harry" I lost it for the first time, barely into the book! (Yes, I'm that silly.) Harry was right, that's as good as "I love you" from him!

Harry...
I was so proud of him! He was so masterful and strong in so many scenes. The final face off with Voldemort is still strong in my mind. I just wish...we could have seen more of him and Ginny, or Ginny in general. She should have destroyed a horocrux or something...

I had the First thing figured from about the second or third book, but I did not gues the full reasons.

As far as Ron, that was a weird twist. Not sure why she did that.

I shed a tear when Dudley was leaving too.

I hope they don't cut too much out in the movie.

Snape...:D
I actually believed he did not kill Dumbledore, just faked it. I expected him to show up at some point.I did not expect him (Snape) to die the way he did.!

Ginny..
I thought she should have been used a little more, and Harry should have stood up to Ron in the beginning when he confronted him about her.

Albertus...
I fully expected Dumbledore to come back, Albertus was a big surprise.

Voldemort...
I really thought he was quite the idiot this time around. However, I suppose desperation and fear make anyone not think clearly. He truly didn't have a clue about stuff that is so obvious and normal to people who have loving connections to others. I agree, he was kind of a fool in htis one, when he held all the cards....

Dursleys...
And I really hoped Petunia would say something nice to Harry, as close as she was to Lily.!

Harry...
One of the things that drove me carazy was when they seemed to be sitting aroundtrying to figure out what to do. Harry wanted to go to Gothric Hollow from the get go and he should have made them go there..!

Molly Weasely...
That was a great scene when she jumped in and attacked Bellatrix??? Way to go Mom!

newbie7069

Dobby
That really made me cry too!! It was just so heartwrenching!!!

Ginny I agree that I think she should have played a more integral part. I was disappointed about that.

Molly LOVED that part with Bellatrix!!! They better put that in the movie!!!!

Snape I too never believed that he was bad. I really felt like there had been too many opportunities for him to have done something horrible to Harry where he didn't. Especially at the end of Half Blood Prince, after he "killed" Dumbledore and was being chased by Harry. He just deflected all of Harry's jinxes, but never realy tried to hurt him (which he could have easily done, without interferring with Voldemort's desire to be the one to finish him off). As to the part about him loving Lily......I guess I must have missed those rumours......took me by suprise!!! But I thought it was a stroke of genius how she worked it so that it not only explained him but also gave us insight into Petunia. It also left me feeling such pity and sadness for him---as Dumbledore said, no one would know the best of him.

Durselys I was suprised by Duddley, but also very touched. I too really thought Petunia would say something....anything.

Ron One thing that has always drove me crazy about the movies is how they insist on making Ron such a wus half the time. The books actually show him having quite a bit of guts. I was shocked that he left, but the explanation was pretty good. Plus it actually allowed the opportunity to touch on the struggles he has had internally by being the great Harry Potter's best friend.

Neville I LOVED where she went with Neville!!!!! You always knew it was there.

Peter Pettigrew...
Ok, after knowing the whole story, can anyone think WHY the sorting hat put Peter Pettigrew in Gryffindor??!! Not one ounce of courage.

The only thing I can think of is that he begged the hat to do it ... we already know the hat will take your own wishes into consideration...

So what was all that about? He basically disappeared from trhe story, along with his parents. None of them had an ounce of courage... They went from the biggest protagonists besides Voldemort, to almost a non story.

I think that she touched on it a bit at the end of Book 6, where he coudn't bring himself to kill Dumbledore. And then at his house, after the three of them had been captured by Greyback, he couldn't bring himself to come right out and say that they had captured Harry, Ron or Hermione. I kinda got the feeling that while they thought themselves almost royal and above everyone else, they had never really had the bloodlust of Bellatrix. Or at the end, Narcissa obviously knew that Harry was still alive but lied to Voldermort since all she cared about was finding Draco. I guess I think it just showed how reluctant Draco really was about the whole thing.

Gotta question..........

In the Epilogue, Harry checks his watch which had "once been Fabian Prewett's." Who is that? Is that a reference to a previous book I've missed somehow? It seems to me to be unlikely she just slipped that name in there like that, that is must be referencing something. Anyway thought I'd ask.

In this book, Molly Weasely gives him a watch for his 17th birthday "...all wizards get a watch on their 17th birthday" She could not afford a new one, so I believe he was the previous owner, but I do not remember if there was any signifigance to the name.

Answer...
Fabian Prewett died in the original Order of the Pheonix, and was a cousin of Molly Weasley's. He died as a hero, taking 5 death eaters with him. Harry received it as a gift of for his 17th birthday from the Weasleys.

Thanks. Correction though...

Thanks for pointing me to that scene. I just went back and checked it and it says he was Molly's brother. I also had done some online searches. Apparently the consensus is that she had two brothers Fabian and Gideon (talked about in another book as dying in the fight with 5 death eaters) -- hence the "F" and "G" for Fred and George.

Fred's death was the hardest of all to take. NOOOOOOO!!!   I get choked up thinking about it now, and it's a fictional character! The next worse was Lupin and Tonks, leaving behind an orphaned Teddy.  *where's my tissues?*

Agreed
Fred's was hard I agree!! Percy's reaction made it even more so!! It was strange though how Lupin and Tonks' deaths were kinda a barely mention though. It did seem to have some symbolism with Harry having been asked to be his godfather--circular even into his own life with his parent's death and Sirius.

Question for everybody....

What types of things would you have liked to learn in the Eppy that you didn't?

Me1.What happened to Luna?
2. Who was the Hogwarts Headmaster/Headmistress? Was it still McGonagall?
3. What type jobs did Harry/Ron/Hermoine wind up having?
4. Who's child was Victorie? George or Bill?
5. Did George keep up with the joke shop after Fred's death?
6. Did Harry ever see the Dursley's again?

I'm sure I can think of some more.

Yeah, probably the saddest.

I am glad Percy came around. I don't recall George's reaction.
And I agree that Lupin and Tonks were very played down. They did not say much about Teddy in the eppy either. I would like to know how much Harry was involved. You know, being a godfather at 17?????

I agree with all those!
Also:
Who were the rest of the Faculty?
Did Dean and Luna get together? Maybe Neville? (Luna's painting in her room wrenched my heart.)
How did Neville get the Sword?
Where did they live? You would think with harry's money they could afford another room for Ted.
What happened to the rest of the Death Eater's?
Why did they keep Slytherin? Not one of them stayed to fight, did they? Why not change it to another House, like Dumbledore or something?
What happened to Hagrid?

I know She kind of left it open for another series about Albus, but I have no idea how she could catch the magic and innocence a second time around.

My guesses for some of the questions...

Who's child was Victorie? George or Bill?
Bill and Fluer's. That was a very French name. ;)

How did Neville get the Sword?

Because "only a true Gryffindor can pull that sword out of the hat..." just like Harry way back in the Chamber of Secrets. Remember, at that time Voldemort had put the sorting hat on his head to taunt and humiliate him. What he didn't realize was the hat would also provide Neville with a weapon!

Where did they live? You would think with harry's money they could afford another room for Ted.

I am pretty sure the Potters would take Teddy in, it's just that he was being raised by his Grandmother, Andromeda Tonks, so no need. They were only joking about he almost already lives there anyway. ;) Obviously, he is extremely close to his god parents and their family.

Why did they keep Slytherin? Not one of them stayed to fight, did they?

That's not true completely...Slughorn stayed to fight (maybe hide a bit), and Snape was a Slytherin hero after all...

What happened to Hagrid?

He went back to his job at Hogwarts. In the eppy Harry reminded his son that he was supposed to go for tea at Hagrid's hut on Sunday. :)

Hi folks,

I read the book to, took my mind off the troubles of "my world" so to speak, lol.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It has a very full plot line and I've noticed her skill has improved vastly.

There were just some areas that dragged on for all eternity...it shouldn't take 5 pages to get out of a house, lol. Oh well. I was a little disappointed w/ how she chose to deal with some of the characters...but, it's her story so--more power to her. I'm just glad she didn't kill off any of the main three. I was almost positive she'd kill poor Harry...A LA Lord of the Rings' Frodo...but alas, she did not and I am ever thankful.

I just hope the rumors that I've heard are true and that perhaps ONE day, she may write more stories on Harry and his friends. I know initially she was staunch about "Seven stories ONLY..." but recent reports are saying that she has decided to "not close the door on Harry...it's not a sure thing that I'll never write more..." After all...what of Luna? Draco? The Dursley's? Lots more to tell if she wants to...but I guess in her situation she'd never have to write another book the rest of her life!!!!

Great story, truly great.

Elyse

She didn't really introduce any new characters (besides I suppose Mr. Lovegood) in this book. When I was thinking "movie casting..." it occurred to me most characters have been cast by past movies. They could probably even write out of the movies 6 and 7 Bill and Fluer without sacraficing plot points...

Well.........

They are going to have to cast someone to play Narcissa, for Book 6 & Book 7. Unless they completely change up everything. And Fleur was in the Goblet of Fire movie, so she is already cast. I think it will help tremendously with the filming of Book 6 that the final Book has come out. I would think it'll probably influence what they do with the movie---by thinking ahead to how they'll do the movie for Book 7. I read somewhere that they are set to start filming Half Blood sometime this September.

They'll need a Slughorn for Book 6, but not really for Book 7. Plus someone to play Scrimingour (sp?).

I'm wondering about the casting for Aberforth/Tom of the Hog's Head. We already saw someone in the Order of the Phoenix movie, but he didn't really look all that much like Dumbledore so I wonder if they'll keep him or replace him.
