I am building a new system, as my old one is having FAR too many issues. What do you think of this:

AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 2.80GHz on an MSI motherboard (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3118914&CMP=EMC-TIGEREMAIL&SRCCODE=WEBLET03ORDER) with

4 GB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz E.P.P. Memory (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2206874&CMP=EMC-TIGEREMAIL&SRCCODE=WEBLET03ORDER) (4 x 1024MB)

GeForce 7600 GT Video (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2427578&CMP=EMC-TIGEREMAIL&SRCCODE=WEBLET03ORDER) card

500 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA HDD (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2273393&CMP=EMC-TIGEREMAIL&SRCCODE=WEBLET03ORDER)

Lite-On Super-Multi Lightscribe 20x DVD Burner (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2665639&CMP=EMC-TIGEREMAIL&SRCCODE=WEBLET03ORDER)

Quick enough for my uses, I think. I thought about going with a quad core, but I don't have any plans for software that uses that much power any time in the near future. I just couldn't justify the extra cash. I thought about a quicker video card, but for now, I can just add a second card and bridge them if I find the one isn't good enough. Any suggestions?

Sweet system. I love TigerDirect, but they charge sales tax in FL, NC , and IL. I've found the bottom line ends up sweeter at newegg.com, plus they're shipping is even quicker (if you can believe that) and cheaper shipping.

Dive - that setup is almost orgasmic!

Just for example... your video card is $75 with no tax over at newegg.

I'm sure you'll find similar results for all the items. I've done a lot of business with them and can vouch easily. Never had to call them though and Tigerdirect was always really good to work with. Once they got double authorizations for all my charges on my bank card by accident overdrawing my account. They called my bank and when they wouldn't budge, they paid all my overdrafts (like 5 of them) without blinking. I stuck with TG despite the savings for a long time after that for loyalty purposes, but eventually broke.

You could get the next video card up for what you would spend at TG.

I will remember that. Damn! My processor is $50 less.

I could have saved about $300 with them!

I was thinking that Tiger was cheap!

Looks good, only suggestion is go with SATA II instead of SATA I. You'll get double the transfer rates. Do stick with Seagate, however.

I'd also suggest getting a second drive and either setup a RAID array or a clone disk option in case you run into issues like this in the future!!

I'm a big fan of AMD over Intel and Asus over MSI (just personal preference).

I build another system a couple months ago and went with a P4 3.0GHz (1MB cachce 800FSB) on an Asus P5VDC-MX board (with heat sink / fan). Paid $150 new off eBay.

Then I went to Tiger and bought a gig of PC4200 DDR2 memory for $79.

Costco lured me into buying a 20.1" widescreen Sceptre last year for $269. It's only 800:1 @ 8ms. Tiger has a 22" right now for $229 and it's got 2000:1 contrast and 2ms response. I can't believe the price drop in just a year's time.

I also dug up an old NVidia accelerator I had and dropped it in as opposed to getting a new video card that I'll come no where close to maxing out (I don't game on my PC). But for $99 for a 128-bit card, how can you go wrong?

You're right-on with going SATA (and thanks for that tip, MasterP).

Looks like you got a kickass system, Dive

Give geeks.com a look too. I used to be a fan of newegg way back when but I can't stand using their site anymore. Geeks.com has always been good for me.

Doesn't change the fact that we'd want a system that WOULD be good for gaming! I like to get something close to the best, fire up some current game to ooh and ahh at, then never play it...

anyway, a good gaming system is likely to handle almost everything better and be more visually appealing for multimedia anyway.

We're of the gaming generation. Just like those before us prayed to Betty Crocker.

Sigh

When I placed the order, my BofA card declined. Why? The fraud department said it was "unusual activity." I got that straightened out. Then, TigerDirect wouldn't ship to my house unless I gave them my SSN, which I refused to do. They do not need that, since they have a valid CC#. So, I got tired of fighting with them, and I canceled the order.

I will go with someone else. I will never shop there again.

SS#, NO WAY! What in Earth do they need that! Regarding the system, sounds pretty nice, the only problem I have with it is that's it not portable! I have 7 computers at my home and now ony the 4 laptops ever get touched. LOL

Are you sure it wasn't "Verified by Visa" that was asking for your ss#? That is a web-wide service for merchants and It might not have been TG asking for it.

Anyway, you should be free to get a better deal now!

Opposite here... I have a nice laptop for school and it gets dusty all summer. I gotta sit back in my chair with a real keyboard and a nice big screen... plus a REAL mouse... using peripherals on a laptop is too messy for me.

Too old Tar!!!

Unfortunately I started gaming with Commodore 64's back in ...well, a long time ago!!

I won't mention the game, but have you ever heard of Dimwit Flathead??

And even before that we played "Bags of Wind" on the sub's spare fire control computer.

EDIT: And yes, there are preferable diversions, but when that's not available.....

You have the option to sign up for Verified by Visa on Tiger - they don't set it up for you.

What BS! There's no reason for them to ask for your SSN. You straightened the "problem" out with your issuing bank by giving them all the information they needed to allow the transaction. End of discussion.

Sounds like another case of an $8 phone jockey using a script instead of their head.

I ordered just about the same system, but with a 750GB drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148134), and it was $200 cheaper

Newegg has some weird policies too, they won't ship to an address other than the billing address without an FBI background check. It seems their reasoning is lots of people CC fraud this way by shopping online then having stuff sent to their house (where obviously **they could never be caught or traced** ) lol

Yeah could be $5.00 an hour power.

CleverCynic
08-07-2007, 12:18 PM
Shipping to the billable address is a reasonable request... I think.

I used to play the pre-cursor to PONG before there were 2 paddles... it was called "Serve" and it was pretty boring :IThankYou:

That's a SWEET hard drive... I think I'm going to snag it myself.

It says it ships in the slower speed jumper configuration so be on the lookout for that.

If I was going to commit CC fraud, it wouldn't be on computer stuff. I'd be enjoying drinks in the casino of a cruise ship as it makes its way through the Greek Isles.

Not to hijack the thread, but I remember stopping by the store to pick up some fresh lemons and the clerk asked to see my ID when I swiped my card. I asked her, "if I was going to use a stolen credit card, don't you think I'd have a case of vodka up here too?"

nope.. it's like printers now... never a cable.. but you should have gotten one with your motherboard... I had to go dig it up when I got my SATA drive.

Ptht! Desktops.

I went with a ThinkPad T60p. Has a Core2 Duo, 2GiB memory, 160GiB drive, a dual layer DVD burner, and a 256MB ATI video chipset. With a full docking station it came in at a smidge over $1800 (with sale discounts).

It plays Supreme Commander and Quake 4 at full tilt...and I can just press a button and take it with me.

Fact is, by the time you add all the bells and whistles and a decent monitor to a desktop system you are only paying 10-20% less than a comparable laptop these days.

I did this one for about $1000. It is really quick. I am running Vista on it, and Supreme Commander runs like a dream.

On a side note, my old system may just be for sale in the near future.

PC Chips Motherboard, M861G
2 GB DDR 400 SDRAM
AMD Athlon 64 3800 processor
Visiontek X1300 AGP Video with 512 MB Ram
Western Digital 129 GB IDE HDD
DVD Burner
only software included will be Windows XP.

No keyboard, mouse, monitor, or any other peripherals.

Why are you playing Supreme Commander and not Command & Conquer 3? :)
